Christmas should feel like a time of comfort, connection and proper food on the table, yet across the Hurunui and North Canterbury many families are finding it harder than ever to afford the basics. Meat, especially, has become something people go without when budgets are stretched, and for parents already feeling the pressure, Christmas week can feel incredibly heavy.
This year we decided to do something real about it.
Feeding Families with Dignity
The Bald Butcher’s Christmas Charity Boxes are our way of making sure families across our region have access to proper, nourishing food for the whole Christmas week, not only the day itself. Working from our butchery in the Hurunui, Steve the Bald Butcher and the team will prepare fresh meat packs using local beef, lamb, pork and chicken, all sourced from farmers we know and trust.
These boxes are delivered directly to food banks across the Hurunui and to Hope Community Trust in Rangiora. These organisations work on the front line with families doing it tough, and they tell us that good quality meat is one of the things people wish for the most.
Every donation helps us purchase animals, make sausages, patties, mince, kebabs and marinades, and cover packaging, staff time and delivery. Everything is supplied at cost, not retail, which means every dollar stretches further and feeds more families.

Going Beyond the Hurunui
This year we’re taking things one step further. Alongside the charity boxes distributed locally, we will send three large Christmas boxes anywhere in New Zealand. These special boxes include vegetables, beautiful cuts of meat, and a PJs pie, and they will go to families nominated through our social media.
The more donations we receive, the more of these nationwide boxes we can send. It becomes a ripple of kindness that reaches well beyond our region.

We’ll be sharing the journey across our social media, including behind-the-scenes footage from the butchery, updates on production, and stories from the distribution teams. You’ll also be able to nominate a family anywhere in New Zealand to receive one of the large Christmas boxes.
Where Your Money Goes
Every contribution supports the direct costs only (NO PROFIT) of:
- Purchasing beef, lamb, pork and chicken
- Ingredients to make sausages, patties, marinades and kebabs
- Packaging and labelling
- Staff time in the butchery preparing the packs
- Delivery to food banks and nationwide recipients
No retail mark-ups, no wasted spending, everything at cost with transparency the whole way.

The Bald Butcher’s Christmas Charity Boxes exist because food is one of the purest ways to care for someone. When a family opens their fridge at Christmas and sees good food waiting for them, something shifts. Stress eases, hope returns, and for a moment they feel held by the community they are part of.
